Do you like to play with glue? If so, there is a good chance you have already used gel medium (if you haven’t then you ought to!). My jar of what looks like some sort of cosmetic potion happens to be gloss but you can get the matte instead …..

Using Gel Medium with Paint

I painted the background with my watercolors and then used my finger to smear two swirls onto the page. I then applied blue acrylic paint over the gel medium while it was still wet. The gel medium dries transparent and with little peaks which adds more visual and tactile interest to my journal page. I like how the gel medium gives ‘space’ to the acrylic which I would not know how to achieve without it. And I used a Sharpie marker to write over one swirl once it was dry.

Gel Medium with Embellishments

I wanted my gal to have an embellishment so I used the gel medium to add crumbled up tissue paper. I am thinking of using this method to apply the tissue paper to a larger part of the background for another journal page….

The gel medium works great for gluing things like the tissue paper since it dries clear and adds depth. Fun page :)

I’ve used those before, but back in college when I was taking painting. I LOVE textured elements in flat art- not one for 2D work really at all, so it’s fun to see what you can do with it. I love your ideas- and that you’re having so much fun with it!
