After reading a thought-provoking post about a challenge to upcycle more items and to find new ways to fix things within the house, I thought about what were some things I could do in my own home. And I came across a lovely blog by a pastor’s wife that seems to excel at turning their tiny budget into wonderful things for their daughter. This is my take on the cardigan hat using a sweater that is now too big for my husband (the problem with exercise) and that he no longer wanted.

1. Measure the head the hat will keep warm! (My daughter!)

2. Cut a large circle from the front of the sweater. Cut along the hem as long as you need plus two inches to finish. (Forgive my wonky circle). 3. Sew a gathering stitch using your longest length. I sewed about 1/4″ from the cut end. Gather to your needed size. 4. Pin the hem to the outside. Since my hem was so tiny I could not fold over. That is fine. 5. Zig-Zag stitch slowly. My husband’s sweater was thick so the slower you go the better the results! 6. Embellish! I used the buttons from the sweater but I am thinking of adding a removable fabric flower.

So great to see your upcycling effort. I always feel the pangs when you have to throw out something you like but is now faulty. Giving it another life is simply the best way to go!

Excellent! I pulled out an old handknit jumper that I scorched while drying it by the fire. I only ever got to wear it once and didn't have the heart to throw it out as it is pure wool, knitted lovingly by a friend. I have grandchildren on the wind now, so I might re-create it into a few of these!
