Upcycled Sweater Hat Tutorial
After reading a thought-provoking post about a challenge to upcycle more items and to find new ways to fix things within the house, I thought about what were some things I could do in my own home. And I came across a lovely blog by a pastor’s wife that seems to excel at turning their tiny budget into wonderful things for their daughter. This is my take on the cardigan hat using a sweater that is now too big for my husband (the problem with exercise) and that he no longer wanted.
1. Measure the head the hat will keep warm! (My daughter!)
2. Cut a large circle from the front of the sweater. Cut along the hem as long as you need plus two inches to finish. (Forgive my wonky circle).
3. Sew a gathering stitch using your longest length. I sewed about 1/4″ from the cut end. Gather to your needed size.
4. Pin the hem to the outside. Since my hem was so tiny I could not fold over. That is fine.
5. Zig-Zag stitch slowly. My husband’s sweater was thick so the slower you go the better the results!
6. Embellish! I used the buttons from the sweater but I am thinking of adding a removable fabric flower.

Very cute hat! I hope your daughter allows a picture so we can see her in it. :)
That is SO cute. I think I have to make one for me. Now I just need to find a sweater, because of course, I took everything from my closet clean-out to the thrift store today. aaaagh.
Very awesome! What a great idea – thanks for sharing this with us!
That is a very cute idea! And your daughter is an adorable model!
I love this idea. Don't know if I will try it though!
That is a GREAT way of upcycling a sweater. The hat turned out beautifully – and omg your children are soooo adorable. I love the shots you took and b/w styling.
A flower would be a perfect finishing detail :)
How cute! What a great idea :)
I can never get rid of clothing that has great fabric…there are so many things that can be done with it!

What a fun project! Thanks for sharing.
So great to see your upcycling effort. I always feel the pangs when you have to throw out something you like but is now faulty. Giving it another life is simply the best way to go!
What an amazingly adorable daughter you have!!
How cute! daughter AND hat!
It's a great tutorial. Great job and awesome shop too.
Excellent! I pulled out an old handknit jumper that I scorched while drying it by the fire. I only ever got to wear it once and didn't have the heart to throw it out as it is pure wool, knitted lovingly by a friend. I have grandchildren on the wind now, so I might re-create it into a few of these!
